Garments of development

Found materials from buildings under construction paired with traditional embroidery techniques alongside footage from the train journey from home to work mixed with safety icons, Garments of development is inspired by the experience of living as a property guardian in London. It addresses the lack of housing access in a global wealth accumulation context and basic rights disparity, particularly for the migrant working class in the UK.

The textile sculpture invites to reflect on how it feels to live in temporary accommodation and look for a place to live. An accompanying short film asks; where is this state of endless ‘development’ leading?. The drawings explore the encrypted developers semiotics.

Commissioned by Turf Projects for ‘The Forever Temporary’ duo exhibition alongside Nicolaas van de Lande in London, 2024-5.

The exhibition is supported by Henry Moore Foundation, Arts Council England and Garfield Weston Foundation.
